Role Summary:
Reporting to the VP Finance, the Director of Accounting Operations, leads the accounting team in supporting corporate accounting, reporting, tax, and control functions. This role is pivotal in ensuring comprehensive financial management and compliance, with a strategic focus on income and sales tax, tax compliance, and planning. The Director collaborates closely with the VP Finance on control management and partners with the management team to safeguard the organization's assets and drive financial strategy.
Key responsibilities include preparing accurate financial statements, managing bank platforms and payments, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and coordinating financial closing. The role also involves supporting budget and outlook processes, managing capital spending and investments, and overseeing payroll and accounts payable/receivable activities, all with a strategic lens to enhance financial performance and operational efficiency.
Main responsabilities
The main responsibilities are:
Ensuring Comprehensive Tax Compliance and Strategic Planning
- Manage the payment of fiscal requirements such as GST/HST and income tax installments.
- Handle corporate tax obligations and remittance of GST/PST.
- Collaborate with our external auditor and the VP Finance on tax planning, including SR&ED (Scientific Research & Experimental Development) applications.
- Ensure adherence to local, provincial, and federal budgetary reporting requirements.
Internal Audit, Annual Audit & Financial Control
- Develop, deploy, and oversee accounting controls to ensure accountability and minimize risk. This includes maintaining robust financial controls.
- Maintain a system of policies and procedures that impose adequate control over all financial activities.
- Coordinate all relations with the company's external auditors and tax advisors.
- Ensure records systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards.
Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage the bank platform as a second administrator.
- Review payments prior to release to ensure integrity and timing.
- Ensure all financial information is accurate, consistent, and compliant with accounting principles and regulations.
- Coordinate monthly, quarterly, and annual closings and analyses to ensure timely and accurate financial information.
- Review general ledger maintenance and balance sheet reconciliations, working with the Financial Planning & Accounting group for proper accrual and completion of month-end.
- Support the budget and outlook processes.
- Manage capital spending, tax provisioning, and investment activities.
- Support the production of management and Board presentations.
- Provide ad-hoc reports to the Board and senior management related to the financial position and other aspects of the business.
- Maintain adequate internal control over financial operations.
- Keep documented policies and procedures up to date.
- Oversee payroll operations by coordinating with external service providers.
- Manage and support the activities of accounts payable and receivable.

COMPETENCY PROFILE AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience/Certification
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting.
- 10-15 years of relevant experience.
- CPA Certification.
- Proven experience in developing and maintaining internal controls to minimize risk and ensure accountability.
- Strategic financial management and compliance expertise.
- Experience in preparing accurate financial statements and managing financial operations.
- 5 years of experience in team leadership.
Other qualifications
- Proficiency in managing financial operations, including tax compliance, financial reporting, and budgeting.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements, and general ledger maintenance.
- Ability to analyze financial data, perform reconciliations, and ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Ability to coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors and manage internal audits.
- Effective problem-solving skills to address financial discrepancies and improve existing processes.
- Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft 365 suite etc.
